SHIFT/ahead │ genAI: a textbook SOV scramble
Generative AI is proving to be a textbook example of hype. The topic went from relatively nascent to saturated in an instant. Now, companies are racing to launch new tech, embed it into existing tech and claim a leadership position in the discussion.?
Our team is tracking how it's impacting #PR and #Communications . Join us as we share real-time analysis, parallel lessons from past innovation waves and considered strategies to help companies maximize the current genAI opportunity and guard against possible blowback.
POINT TAKEN
YTD, there were 106,000 news mentions of the topic, up nearly 3,000% vs. the previous period, according to our analysis.?It didn’t take long for companies to jump on this wave and earning coverage is already quite competitive.?
WHAT'S SHAPING THE NEWS
AI anxiety. The genAI regulation discussion has progressed. Testifying before Congress, OpenAI’s Sam Altman welcomed legislation and the creation of a new regulatory agency ; all while members of Congress likened genAI’s potential impacts to the atomic bomb. Then, 350+ leaders co-signed a statement about addressing societal risks , including extinction. It was similar to a letter earlier this year calling for a pause on AI technology development. This topic will likely continue to lead in the media, corporate communications and probably in tech giants’ lobbying efforts. For organizations in the space or being impacted, it’s both a communications opportunity and challenge.
Product roadmap talk. Companies are racing to embed genAI into their tech. They’re getting attention for it and investors like it (a lot ). Amazon is working to infuse genAI into its app (because like with many longstanding behaviors, genAI has the potential to reshape how people shop). Meanwhile, Cloudfare unveiled a solution that lets organizations audit what AI tools team members are using (and restrict access/gate data). Outside of tech, expect to see more products come to life in health and education . Bill Gates thinks both will be “revolutionized” by AI.?The news cycle moved from hypothesizing to reporting real-world applications quickly.
Stocks’ wild ride. AI mentions during earnings calls grew 16x in Q1. For some it's been great , but it’s not all rosy. Like when Chegg said ChatGPT was hurting its business and its shares dropped 40+% . People are speculating many companies and entire sectors could be under threat. It’s a financial and corporate communications conundrum they need to be ready to solve for.
