It all began with a single word.
I was in first grade, and said the word “astonished” in a sentence. My parents lavishly praised me with, “Wow, that’s amazing! Such a big word for a six-year-old!” I was “astonished” that something so simple could elicit such a positive reaction…and I wanted more.
That was the start of me becoming a high-achiever, which then evolved into a hyper-achiever, consumed by self-imposed pressure to achieve more and more. As soon as I reached one goal, within the same breath, I was reaching for what was next, looking to outdo myself and exceed expectations.
This snowballing of pressure created stress, restless nights, and a tightly wound person who was killing it in life, but hurting myself - easily overwhelmed, overstressed, and often on the brink of breakdowns.
