I have seen many companies’ in my 15 years career who starts from one room and make many branches in just a few years, grab a smart market share during initial years, earning revenue and progressing upward but what happened that suddenly they become vanished from the market so quickly, What was the real reason. Is that their people, the economy, Market situation, obsolete Product or something else?
When I studied a few of these type of successful startups and disaster failures, who performs better in initial years and then just in few after they completely finished, I figure out one of the most obvious reasons of their failure is their “Leaders style and the Work Culture” they set and unfortunately when they are moving towards senility still the leaders take the same mindset, don’t want to change the culture, not accepting the defeat real reason, blaming attitude, not interested to change themselves until the reality knocks the door and the life hits so hard.
Unfortunately, leaders/CEO’s and Founder of the organization when fail to make their company perform better they blame the people, economy, situation, and market but not accepting that this is the time to do self-audit about their attitude, their style of management and the culture they set in their organization. Leaders sets examples for their people, the way you treat your organization, your people treat in the same way. If you care they care, if you ignored they ignored. If you take no responsibility and no accountability even at a personal level then they follow you as an example.
We need to develop a strong culture where we should focus to foster a progressive environment and shift the people more from below the line to above the line. We should derive the talent towards self-accountability and need to focus on developing the attributes which lead them to move above the line.
You’ll remain stuck unless you acknowledge that you’re functioning below the line. Self-audit is a key to evaluate yourself, to know yourself better and shift the mindset from fixed to a progressive state.
A list of telltale signs that you’re below the line:
1. When you feel confusion in everything
2. Not my job attitude
3. When feel imprisoned by your circumstances, I can’t do this.
4. Passive Listening and not taking other views into account
5. Finger-pointing
6. When procrastinate more and always looking to pass the work on someone’s shoulder which you’re responsible
7. Finding excuses for not to do a job, instead of providing solutions
8. Focus on who made the mistake instead lets correct it
9. Waste time and Energy frequently in bashing the company, boss and colleagues.
10. Avoid meetings and reports which you’re responsible and delay/ignore the things
11. Hiding behind the situations and fake reasons
These are the danger signs, if you find anyone trapped in these, even yourself or your team or organization then respond immediately to help yourself or others to acknowledge that we fall below the line which is the real reason for bad performance, negativity and frequently dissatisfaction. We need to raise ourselves, change our mindset to look at things differently, own the situations and work, pushing ourselves to think in a way to solve it and implement the best fit solution. You should develop a self-accountability and joint-accountability culture in your organization from Leader to Individual level. Leaders sets example for their people, so it starts to form you.
Develop a behavior of taking responsibility of every situation, issue, and mistake and instead of blaming, giving excuses and putting failure on other shoulders you should develop a culture where people see the matter, own its responsibility, figure out the maximum best possible solution in the given scenario and implement with confidence then the entire organization and work style would change and leads to more productivity, self-accountability, sense of achievement and fulfillment across the levels.
Lead through accountability, it’s not only foster productivity but also helps you and your people to realize the situation, their maximum potential and it’s a human nature when we tested for something which we never tried or never imagine, we do it with more care and focus and most of the times we achieve what initially we thought not possible. It can transform your team and your organization at the next level faster than you realize. So as a leader sets an example of thinking and behaving Above the line, to See It, Own It, Solve It, and Do It every time you face a problem or issue, your people get inspired by you they look at you every time so when they see your style more accountable they automatically become self- and joint accountable for the work they assigned and perform better than you expect.
