1. This week's big question:
Every week, I'll be delving into big questions concerning emerging environmental sustainability technologies, blended finance solutions, sustainable communities, circularity, and other topics. We will continue to work to make sustainable choices more manageable as we progress toward a better future. We will continue to invest in and collaborate with organizations that are working to move the needle for the planet in innovative ways. Because there is always more to be done on the road to sustainability.

2. Commentary: Beyond “ESG” investment: ending the stalemate
While the need for regulation to protect our environments gets widespread, it is still facing grudging acceptance. Everyone wants a livable planet, everyone wants to adopt sustainability, and everyone wants to reduce costs. But the prevailing view remains stuck inside an inherent and fixed trade-off: ecology versus the economy.
It is grudging because of the lingering belief that regulations erode competitiveness. On one side, we have to keep in mind that social benefits will only arise from strict environmental standards. On the other, industries private costs for prevention and cleanup, leading to higher prices and reduced competitiveness, will overwhelm the systems and worsen supply chains distribution before getting back to a plateau.

3.1—Podcast : “The world of sustainability is both fascinating and complicated”
Topics: boards of directors, governance, and the integration of sustainable practices.
Together with Peter Crow, PhD , we are trying to cover questions that have often been forgotten from the ground up.
Some governance principles at the high level are misunderstood. To set a proper governance structure, board members should understand how an organization's sustainability is linked to the company's strategy, opportunities, and risks.
