1. This week's big question:

Every week, I'll be delving into big questions concerning emerging environmental sustainability technologies, blended finance solutions, sustainable communities, circularity, and other topics. We will continue to work to make sustainable choices more manageable as we progress toward a better future. We will continue to invest in and collaborate with organizations that are working to move the needle for the planet in innovative ways. Because there is always more to be done on the road to sustainability.

?? What do we need more to design and market new investment opportunities for purpose-driven missions?

? In last week's poll, you were almost 70% to say that we need to invest in sustainability assets to address the challenges of a weaker global economy.—[Please see the results and comment thread here].

2. Commentary: Beyond “ESG” investment:?assets for purpose-driven missions

“Unfortunately there is a psychological habit most leaders lack, and that prevents companies from using the information to guide purpose-driven missions effectively without it. Let’s fix this together.”—Yael

This is the third and last part of our three-part series on "The shift to a sustainable economy". Please read the first and second parts here:

During the latter half of the twentieth century, publicly traded stocks became an increasingly important investment vehicle in the core portfolios of individual and institutional investors. These stocks of large corporations comprise the public equities market. Equities, which typically trade on highly regulated and liquid stock exchanges, offer the prospect of higher returns than cash or fixed-income investments but at a higher risk and volatility.

Public equities represent corporate ownership and thus theoretically confer certain rights and opportunities for investors to influence corporate management towards responsible activities. But in practice, mainly due to the ownership aspect, equities are so widely dispersed and highly liquid that stock owners' ability to function directly as active owners is somewhat limited and falls primarily to large institutional or activist investors.

Interestingly, there’s a growing recognition that ESG issues can be material to the business, causing investors to become more aware of incorporating critical risk and opportunity management into fundamental stock analysis. As a result, responsible investors may gain additional insight into a given company's potential by noting that long-term ESG issues, such as climate change, diversity, or obesity, are not currently priced into the company's share price.

3.1—Jér?me Tagger "The world always lived on the edge of chaos."

It is clear to many people that we live in a very dynamic period. We live and work in very complex systems. What's our agency? How do we drive change?

- Is it realistic to say that humans don't change in a post pandemic era?

- Are we active or proactive in the context of change?

Jér?me explores the intersection of financial markets and society. He joined Preventable Surprises, a think tank focused on systemic sustainability risks in financial markets, as CEO in 2020 after 15 years of field building in responsible finance. He was a Director at the Global Impact Investing Network, the founding COO of the UN-backed Principles for Responsible Investment, Head of Research at Eurosif and Chief Revenue Officer at ImpactAlpha. He most recently advised UNEP FI’s Positive Impact Initiative and the World Benchmarking Alliance.
