China expects to increase its production of chips and other materials by 70% by 2025. This goal, part of the Made In China 2025 Plan, reflects the country’s increasing share in the global semiconductor market.

However, while China’s emergence in the semiconductor industry is often portrayed as a major supply chain threat, these claims don’t exactly match up with the reality of the industry. Learn more about the future of semiconductor production and read insights from Supplyframe’s CMO Richard Barnett.

Industry Roundup:

?? This week, the EU parliament reached agreement on its European Chips Act, a new €43 billion initiative that will direct funding towards both public and private investments to bolster the region’s semiconductor supply and help achieve self-sufficiency. The act is designed to help the EU compete with the US and Asia, particularly following the US’s passage of its own similar CHIPS Act in 2022.

?? During its Q1 update, GM announced that profits decreased by 18.5% year-over-year. While sales in the US grew by 18%, China sales dropped 25%. This reflects an emerging trend of Western automakers struggling to catch up as Chinese consumers increasingly turn towards EV's which are largely made by Chinese manufacturers.
