After years of collaborating with some of the world's most successful businesses, I've compiled a list of characteristics that my clients have told me why I was engaged as an advisor to them. First and foremost, it rarely had to do with price. In fact, I was normally not the least expensive but presented the most value to answer the omnipresent question: What's In It For Me? (WIIFM)
While it may not be necessary to fulfill every one of these qualities, if any resonate with you, integrating them into your marketing efforts, such as your website, LinkedIn profile, presentations, and proposals, could help you stand out among your peers.
First and foremost, being credible is essential. The ability to inspire trust and confidence from the first contact is crucial to building solid relationships with clients.
Additionally, being experienced in your field goes beyond just having a certain number of years under your belt. It's about truly understanding your specialty and continually learning to stay on top of industry trends, laws, and procedures.
Putting the client first is another quality that can set you apart. Keeping their priorities and interests at your mind demonstrates your commitment to their success. Recognizing that you'll look good to others by making them look good to them is vital.

Being an attentive listener is especially important. Quieter individuals tend to excel in this role because they listen more than they talk and don't interrupt. Can you focus on the other person's words without thinking about what you will say next? Can you sense what someone is not saying??
Being personable and likable is another characteristic that can help you succeed. People enjoy being around those who are authentic, admit their mistakes, leave their ego at the door, and are relatable.
Practical communication skills are also critical. As an entrepreneur, you must match a shop-floor worker's verbal and non-verbal styles to a boardroom executive. Creating a dynamic teamwork environment that integrates all project team members and their strengths is essential.?
Facilitation skills are also crucial to solopreneur success. Managing disparate viewpoints and aligning people on essential points and project goals is critical to success. Whether you're a negotiator or a harmonizer, making things happen without ruffling feathers is vital. Issues must be resolved, milestones must be reached, decisions must be made, and changes must be made.
Positivity is another critical characteristic. Keeping people moving toward the goal and finding a silver lining in any circumstance can help you stand out from the crowd. "Glass half-full" people tend to be more successful than "glass half-empty" people.
Finally, being detail-oriented is essential. Ensuring that your emails, documents, presentations, meeting materials, and deliverables are flawless and professional, consistent fonts, colors, and alignment, and are free of typos is critical to building your reputation.
Above all, keeping your word is the cornerstone of success. When you promise something, such as an email or deliverable, by a specific time, you must do whatever it takes to make it happen. Under-promising and over-delivering are vital to building a solid client base and achieving success as a solopreneur.
