Shift Happens!

Shift Happens!

Although I have experienced some rather ouch-filled moments, I am not one who gets nervous going to the dentist. In fact, driving toward a long-awaited appointment for a filling, I noticed how calm I was. Nice, I said to myself.

As the technician prepared to x-ray my troubling tooth, I warned her that I have a very small mouth. Rather than listening to me, she attempted to shove in a large x-ray holder, only to discover that my assessment was correct.

Wincing, I reminded her with a smile that I told you so.

Apologizing, she searched out a smaller holder.

After six tries, each time missing the precise angle of the tooth needing imagery, my cheek (and attitude) was getting irritated. In a rather annoyed tone, she instructed me to just hold the handle of the x-ray myself. Which I did. Finally, it revealed the exact image needed for the dentist to do her job.

Relaxing prone in the dental chair, waiting for Novocain to do its numbing job, I was brought back to how I would have handled this situation in the past. I never would have asserted myself to warn about my mouth size, assumed the technician knew what they were doing. I would have suffered through without saying a word, cringing in pain, taking it like a good little victim.

I would have cried all the way home, then dramatically expressed my ordeal to anyone who would listen. Probably would have repeated my sad story again and again. Maybe for years.

In the future, I would have resisted going back to the dentist, figuring a little tooth ache would be better than going through that again.

It felt good to see my evolution since it is often challenging to see those subtle inner changes. It is far too easy to bypass positive shifts until something reminds you of how far you have come.

Compare it to seeing how much a plant has grown. One day you notice in amazement that it is bursting out of its pot. It seemed only yesterday it was a seedling.

Shortly after I started doing inner work, I was clueless as to how different I had become. I was eating dinner with one of my closest friends who I had not seen for quite a while. Waiting for the check, she unexpectedly commented about how compassionate I had become; how non-judgmental I had gotten; how attentively I was listening to her.

It was shocking, especially since I did not realize I had been lacking any of those qualities!

My reminder to you is to trust the process of your inner evolution. It may not appear in a dramatic form, but it is happening none-the-less. Whether you notice it or not, shifts are taking place. The seeds that were planted at some point in your life are taking root; the plant is slowly outgrowing its pot.

Ask yourself, who did I used to be? Ponder that for a moment. I bet you have come a long way, baby. Especially at the dentist's office.
