Finding and Loving Your Authentic Self :
The first step towards happiness is embracing acceptance, especially if you are feeling that you are from the LGBTQAI+ community. Here are three important aspects of acceptance to honor:
Acceptance of self
Acceptance of surrounding & family
Acceptance of self:
Understanding Your Emotions: Reflect on questions regarding your LGBTQ+ identity. Exploring and comprehending sexuality and LGBTQ+ concepts can help answer the questions.
Journaling your thoughts and emotions can aid in processing them, especially during inner conflicts.
Sharing your feelings with a trusted person during difficult times can be beneficial. It's not necessary to come out before you're ready, but confiding in a caring friend or family member can help when feeling overwhelmed.
Recognize that leading a fulfilling life is possible. LGBTQAI+ individuals build relationships, start families, succeed in their careers, and navigate life like everyone else.
Practice self-compassion. Being kind to yourself is essential for happiness.
In essence, it all begins with "Self-acceptance."
Acceptance of surrounding & Family
To create a more equitable world and make a positive impact, it is crucial to establish an inclusive environment where everyone is embraced regardless of age, gender, or sexuality. Research shows that over 40% of LGBTQ+ youth have contemplated suicide due to a lack of support and acceptance in their surroundings. In such instances, fostering a supportive and inclusive atmosphere is essential. It is vital for all of us to accept our colleagues, friends, and those around us without any bias or judgment.
By promoting a safe and accepting environment, we can cultivate a culture of understanding, compassion, and encouragement within our social circles. Respecting each individual's identity is key to ensuring they feel comfortable embracing who they are.
A note to parents of young children:
Parental acceptance is pivotal in a child's life when they come to terms with their LGBTQAI+ identity. Providing guidance, education, and unwavering support is crucial from a family perspective. For both children and adults, it's important to remain receptive as their needs evolve and educate yourself with them continuously. Family and friends' strong support can significantly impact the mental well-being of LGBTQ+ individuals.
Here are some suggestions for supporting your child or family members:
Allow your child to lead when it comes to disclosing their LGBTQ+ identity to other family members to build their confidence and self-acceptance. Inquire how you can assist them in sharing their identity with others.
Maintain a positive outlook around your child and believe they can lead a fulfilling life as an LGBTQ+ adult.
Advocate for your child if they face mistreatment due to their LGBTQ+ identity or gender expression – whether at home, school, or in the community.
Above all, ensure your child knows they are loved and supported by their family.
This year let’s together try our bit to create an equal world and its start from our family and our workplace.
Let us shift our attention away from merely tallying the number of individuals hired from a particular community. Let's focus on creating an environment that recognizes and values each person's identity, emphasizing inclusivity as a top priority.
