In motorcycling, there’s a common phenomenon known as target fixation. This occurs when a rider becomes overly focused on one specific element—often something distracting or potentially dangerous—that they actually want to avoid. Ironically, by fixating on this “target,” they inadvertently steer toward it, increasing the risk of a collision. It’s as if the mind’s attention has taken control of the handlebars, moving them toward the very thing they should be avoiding.
But target fixation isn’t just a risk on the road; it’s a mental trap we all fall into. In our personal and professional lives, we tend to fixate on problems, fears, or distractions, rather than on the solutions and opportunities ahead. This is similar to how expert chess players approach a game. Instead of fixating on their opponent’s pieces, they strategically scan the open spaces on the board to consider future moves. If they only focused on each piece or threat, they’d miss the broader strategy and likely lose the game.
Thanks to Kumaran for pointing me to this phenomenon.
Why We Get So Fixated
Fixating on something, especially something we really want, is natural. Our brains are wired to help us stay focused on things that feel important. In fact, it’s a survival tool! But in today’s busy world, it’s easy to get stuck focusing on the wrong thing for too long. Society often tells us to “hustle” and “grind” to reach our goals, but intense focus on one goal can mean ignoring other important parts of life—like relationships, mental health, and the bigger picture of our careers.
Signs You’re Stuck in Fixation Mode
Here are some clues that you might be too focused on one thing:
When you see these signs, you can start shifting your focus in a healthier way.

Shifting Your Focus to What Really Matters
So, how do we overcome target fixation in our own lives and keep our focus on the right things?
Here are some simple ways to focus on things that are truly meaningful:
In Closing: Steer Toward the Prize, Not the Perils
By shifting our focus intentionally, we can avoid the “crashes” that come from fixating on the wrong things. Whether you’re tackling a challenging project, facing a difficult conversation, or charting a new path in life, learning to look past the immediate obstacles and focusing on the open space helps you steer toward success. Target fixation may seem like an automatic response, but with practice, we can train ourselves to keep our eyes on what truly matters.

4 个月Insightful !! Thinking about it, this is a message that has been passed on as age old wisdom through so many stories!! In one of the stories, Lord Vishu tells sage Narada, you think of me as a friend, I will come to you as a friend, if you think of me as an enemy, I will come to you as an enemy!! Decoding this - You will gravitate towards what occupies your mind wether its a goal you want to achieve, or getting rid of something! That is why a lot of the hero's, in a battle to eliminate an evil, end up becoming the very thing they were fighting! This is my humbleopinion!
