"Nurturing Mental Health In The Workplace: Insights From Richard Kaufman, "The Comeback Coach"

Mental health in the workplace has become of paramount concern in recent years, especially coming out of covid-19. Organizations NOW recognize the impact it has on employee well-being and productivity. In this article we turn to Richard a 23 year Army Veteran, Author and Resiliency Coach to gain insights into what to look for and five essential steps to maintain excellent mental health on the job sight and at home.

1) RECOGNIZE THE SIGNS: It is important to recognize the early signs of someone struggling with mental health issues. This includes changes in behavior, appearance, increased tardiness or absenteeism, and decreased job performance. By identifying these signs, employers and managers can intervene early and offer much needed support.

2) OPEN LINES OF COMMUNICATION: Keep an open and non-judgmental communication about mental health. Creating a culture where team members feel safe talking about their challenges is vital. They are probably suffering in silence. Employers should establish channels for team members to seek help or share their concerns without fear of repercussions like Dave Nordel always talks about.

3) WORK LIFE BALANCE: A key aspect of maintaining great mental health is achieving a healthy work-life balance. Richard Kaufman highly advises setting boundaries and disconnecting from work during non-working hours including SHUTTING off your phone. Encouraging employees to take breaks and use ALL their vacation time can prevent burnout.

4) PROMOTING RESILIENCE: Richard emphasizes the importance of resilience building programs. These programs can include stress management workshops, mindfulness training, and physical well-being initiatives. He says "if One Aspect Of Your Life Is Off Track Usually They All Are". Strengthening employees' resilience equips them to handle workplace challenges more effectively.

5) LEADERSHIP ROLE: REAL leaders play a pivotal role in promoting positive mental health in the workplace. Kaufman suggests that leaders should lead by example, prioritize self-care, and show EMPATHY towards their team members. When leaders openly acknowledge their own mental health struggles, it can help reduce the stigma associated with mental health issues.

Richard harps on the importance of viewing mental health as a collective responsibility, he is also a post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) warrior and suicide attempt survivor. Organizations that prioritize team members mental well-being tend to experience increased employee satisfaction, retention, and overall productivity.

So the importance of mental health can NOT be overstated. Kaufman's insights offer valuable guidance to organizations seeking to create a supportive and mentally healthy work environment. By employing these steps, managers can contribute to a happier, healthier, and more productive workforce.
