SHF provides funding for organ donor recipient
Shelley Mingori Bluse of Marquette, middle, proudly accepts a check for $1,000 from the Superior Health Foundation to help offset organ donation expenses.
Shelley was diagnosed in September 2017 with Stage 4 fibrosis of the liver. She recently received a liver transplant at the University of Wisconsin Madison and has incurred a sizeable amount of out-of-pocket expenses for treatment and travel.
Funding came from the SHF Run For Life Organ Donation Fund, which is designed to assist organ transplant patients with medical costs, prescription and mileage expenses, as well as assist potential organ donors with travel expenses. All monies stay in the Upper Peninsula.
Mingori said following the transplant, she “woke up and was feeling phenomenal.” She added: “I’ve been sick since the end of June. A young man passed away in a car accident and the family asked if I would take his liver. That was overwhelming to me. I am really, really lucky. I feel fantastic, sad, happy … I’m a ball of emotion.”
