“Farming is easier said than done.” This criticising statement made by someone to Sangita Pingale shaped her determination to prove herself as a successful woman in agriculture.?

Today, a successful and well established farmer in Matori. Sangita never really had a plan to get into agriculture. From a young age, she always wanted to join the civil services. But as soon as Sangita Tai completed her graduation in BSc, her parents decided that she should get married. In 2000, Sangita tai married Anil Pingale, a farmer from Matori, and her dream of joining the civil services was left incomplete. Coming from a farming background, Anil’s family's main source of income was agriculture. As Sangita tai never had any experience in farming she would take care of the home chores. While she was doing her part in taking care of the family diligently, her incomplete dreams of joining the services would often make Sangita tai restless. In 2001, Sangita tai and her husband were blessed with a daughter, but this was the same year her father-in-law passed away. Later another traumatic event came into Sangita tai’s life. She gave birth to another baby in 2004, but due to health problems the baby only survived for five months. While Sangita tai had somehow recovered from the loss of her child. In 2007, while she was 9 months pregnant, a fatal accident took her husband Anil’s life.

Sangita tai was left devastated and without her strongest support. Later, in 2017 Sangita tai’s joint family separated and Sangita tai and her children started living with her in-laws.?

The separation brought 13 acres of land on Sangita tai’s part. Sangita tai’s father-in-law would take care of the field. But, in just 3 months of the separation. Sangita tai’s father-in-law expired. Sangita tai was once again left devastated. This time she had the responsibility of her children and mother-in-law on her. With farming as the only source of income, Sangita tai decided to get to work on the farm. As no one in their family had seen a woman work in the field before, this decision of hers brought in a lot of criticism from people.?

One of them even went on to say, “farming is easier said than done.” This statement deeply affected Sanigta tai and she was determined to prove that women can also be successful farmers. She had no experience in farming and it was necessary for her family’s survival to get revenue from their grape plantation. For this, Sangita needed not just guidance but funding as well. Sangita tai's brother came on for her aid and helped her learn everything about the processes involved in grape plantation. Sangita tai kept her jewellery on mortgage and arranged for the funds. Sanita tai was worried about hailstorm and weather conditions that could spoil the crop. In addition, as the farm was near to a water reserve, in monsoon it would become soggy to a point that it was even difficult to walk there. This meant, works like spraying pesticides had to be done manually. Sanita tai had to juggle between both house work and field work. All responsibilities from bringing the groceries for home to bringing the chemicals for the farm had come upon her. She was often caught with an awkward gaze of people in the chemical shops, as they were not used to seeing a woman doing this all. But, slowly everyone became acquainted with this. Sangita tai’s mother-in-law was her biggest emotional and mental support during all this time. Going through all these hurdles with courage, Sangita tai made a good revenue from the grape plantation in 2017 and repaid all her loans in the first year itself. Today Sangita tai successfully produces 600-700 quintal of grapes. Apart from this, her farm is also growing other crops like tomatoes, soybean, etc. She has not just proved herself as an efficient farmer but also is giving her children a good education and life. We salute, Sangita tai determination and courage in front of all obstacles. She is definitely an inspiration to all.
