She’s Safe, on making workplaces safer

The International Day for the elimination of violence against women, which is observed on November 25 every year, has been chosen as the day for kickstarting the 2-week online event for corporates to host programs on and by Be.artsy: Awareness Experts

Be.artsy, India’s Premier Awareness Experts, recently announced India’s first 2 week’ online event, “She’s Safe”, on promoting Indian women safety at work. The 15 day period starts from the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women on 25th November, and goes up to 9th December, nine years to the day that the The Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act, 2013, came into force.

“Women’s Day” and “Women’s Week” have been nothing more than an excuse to sell pink products. It is high time that real women’s issues like workplace safety and financial security are taken up by companies and society.

Be.artsy “She’s Safe” event is about self-reflection and real change by organisations. Up to now, the focus has been on the barest minimum compliance with the provisions of The Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act, 2013. It is nine years since this Act was passed. It is time that organisations stepped up and focussed more on prevention than merely redressal.”

The problem of sexual harassment in the workplace arises from deeper social roots that disempower women from living on their own terms. The concept of consent needs to percolate to all levels of society, to prevent the occurrence of such incidents in the first place, instead of merely punishing those who are caught.

Be.artsy’s founder, Shikha Mittal , says, “Our experience has been that even women who are aware of their rights to be free of sexual harassment are constrained by their financial position. Many are forced to remain silent because they cannot afford to lose the job. Unfortunately, that is still a real risk in many workplaces. Thus, it is necessary for women to first be financially strong, and then they can assert their rights and make the workplace safer for all.”

Be.artsy is the only enterprise that addresses both aspects and educates people in the world of work with specialised programs on Prevention Of Sexual Harassment (POSH) and Financial Literacy (FL) - “IT'S NOT OKAY” and “Be Your Own Lakshmi” respectively.

Be.artsy has been offering programs on POSH and FL since 2010 -- years before the POSH law was passed!115 corporate sessions have already been completed on POSH, and 2000+ on FL.?

The introductory sessions offered between 25 November and 9 December cover the concepts of FL and POSH to educate and empower people at work. This allows organisations to sample one FREE program Be Your Own Lakshmi (BYOL), along with a subsidised session of Be.artsy’s signature IT’S NOT OK program in a compressed and highly accessible timeframe. FL sessions for all employees, not just women, can also be requested in this period.

“She’s Safe” is an initiative for organisations to aspire and take action to create workplaces that are attractive - both financially and safety-wise.?

This is a great initiative. I am a very strong believer in financial literacy and financial independence of women. The first step to empowering a woman to be productive, is to provide a safe workplace. The POSH Act casts a duty on the employer to create a safe workplace. However what can be termed as a safe workplace is not mentioned anywhere. Apart from conducting awareness sessions on POSH, the support services Admin, HR and IT also need to be trained in best practices to contribute towards prevention of sexual harassment at the workplace.

To all the HRs in my network: please go ahead and take the advantage from this initiative and launch something really concrete for the women (also men) at your workplace and say NO to pink product promotion in the name of women empowerment. Nothing wrong in gifting things but lets equip them with real courage over material. Because.... A financially healthy and safe woman has all the power to buy what she wants. What she needs is YOUR affirmation to walk with her in her occupational journey.
