She's a Grand Old Flag

I’m excited! For some time now, I’ve wished for a flag for our home. And several weeks ago, my wish came true. We’re now proudly flying an American flag! It’s positioned right outside my office window, so on windy days, which we seem to have quite often, I can see and hear the flag flapping in the breeze, and I love it.

Every time I see that flag, or any other American flag, I’m reminded of how grateful I am to live in this country. Is it perfect? Far from it. Are there things I’d like to change? You bet. Are there serious and important issues that need to be resolved? Absolutely.

The current situation of a pandemic, civil discord, financial challenges, societal disruption, uncertainty may cause some to say that the U.S. isn’t a great place to live. I disagree. Just think about any other country on the face of the earth. Do the research. And you’ll no doubt conclude, as I have, that I’m blessed to be an American.

Because of the blessings, I believe that each of us has a responsibility to step up and practice inclusiveness, kindness, and compassion – whether that means showing respect to those whose race or religion differ from ours or simply wearing a mask when we go out in public.

One of my treasures is a 48-star flag that came home on the coffin of a WWI soldier, the son of a great, great aunt. That young man gave his life so that you and I could live as we are blessed to do. I’m sure he would want us to fly the flag with pride. The Grand Old Flag flies above us all – anyone who claims to be an American.

On this Fourth of July holiday, fly the flag and make it a grateful day.

On one of mother's visits to see us in Rowlett, I noticed she kept raising her hand as we were driving around. I finally asked her what she was doing. She said everytime she saw an American flag, she would raise her hand and a quick prayer for our country and it's leaders. Our country got a lot of prayer that day as the Garland area had a lot of flags. Such a sweet memory and a great habit of an amazing prayer warrior with such a gentle and quiet spirit. Thanks for sharing this, Julie. I'm stopping to pray for our country now as I look at your flag. God bless you, and God bless America.
