Sheryl Sandberg... same or different?

I was recently approached by someone who said ‘Your background reads very much like Sheryl Sandberg’s background, an influential Woman in Technology’. He went in to say a little more, as I listened with surprise. Usually with an answer for most approaches, what could I say to that?

Daughter of a coal miner, my mother left school (age 8) to support on the family farm. I attended a local UK state school. Born to a Bosnian family, I couldn’t speak a word of English when I started school (age 4). I never expected the link and remain honoured that someone would mention us in the same conversation.

Reflecting afterwards, I read a little more about Sheryl. There are many differences. Here are at least three:

1. Sheryl graduated with a BA in Economics @ Harvard, I graduated with a BA in Economics @ Cambridge.
2. Sheryl wrote a book called ‘Lean in’, my book has a different name.
3. Sheryl met Mark Zuckerberg at the Christmas party....

Having said that, we are both Women in Technology, both passionate about diversity and inclusion. Both committed to making a difference. Reflecting a little more deeply, I realised some lessons in life:  

1. Believe in yourself whatever your background, you never know what’s possible with faith, focus, determination and support.
2. Work towards your goals in small incremental steps. Before you realise it good things happen.
3. Find a job you enjoy and you’ll never have to work another day’. Often seen as a cliché, though so very true when at heart.
4. Support those around you to realise their potential. You never know who you meet on the path and the influence you have in life.
5. Be yourself, forgive and care. Remember we are all human!
6. Appreciate the magic moments in life and create memories together!

I appreciate family, friends and am passionate about my job @ HSBC. Thank you to everyone who has supported when times have been tough and thank you for being there to share the smiles. You know who you are!
