Sherlock, Columbo, And You

Sherlock, Columbo, And You

Sherlock Holmes has been?adapted more than any other?human?character in literary history.

The image you see in your mind when you think of him might be different than mine.

But I'm certain it looks something like this:

Columbo, while a cult classic, is less immediately recognizable.

You'll look at these images and see two completely different characters.

One is a prim and proper English Gentleman:

  • Tall
  • Suave
  • Handsome
  • Impeccable Dress

Columbo is:

  • Short
  • A slob
  • Bumbling
  • With a Glass Eye

But their?role?is the same.

"Genius Detective Who Solves Locked Door Mysteries Impossible For Anyone Else"

Their literary and narrative functions are the same.

In their respective universes, their occupational function is the same.

Their approaches are different.

Everyone Sherlock Holmes meets recognizes him as brilliant. The raw force of his intelligence intimidates his suspects.

Everyone Columbo meets underestimates the rumpled man. Many of his suspects are in the upper-echelons of LA Society, and believe themselves to be smarter than he is.

Columbo uses this to make them let their guard down, and then hit them with his?famous catch-phrase .

But the?skills?the use are exactly the same:

  • Obsessive attention to details
  • Exceptional Memory
  • Lateral Thinking
  • Mastery of Human Psychology

What's my point?

Your character/presentation is distinct from your role/function.

Your character/presentation has nothing to do with your skills.

Your character/presentation?does?determine what rooms you can be in.

In a couple of days we'll cover more about character/presentation and what that means to your bottom line.
