The Shenandoah Song
This beautiful song gets me emotional any time I listen to, especially the first time I did, more than fifteen years ago. I was starting my writing journey in a very complicated season of my life, not sure where it was going to take me. In between all the problems and insecurities I faced at that moment, The Shenandoah Song taught me in a very simple way a good lesson: nothing can touch the soul a person better than a beautiful music combined with a great storytelling.
The lyrics of the song, apparently were based on a true story from the 1800s, when a Canadian sailor traveling down the Missouri River, fell in love with the daughter of the Oneida Iroquois tribe chief’s (Shenandoah). The song became very popular between riverboat men and soldiers of the Civil War and was printed for the first time at The New Dominion Monthly magazine in April 1876, under the author Captain Robert Chamblet.
The first social appearance of the of the song was in 1906 in London, performed by Charles Rosher and recorded by Percy Grainger.
Consider one of the best Folk Song of all times, there are many versions in a very different styles. Anyway, my favorite is the one performed by the Norwegian Soprano Sissel Kyrkjebo with the flute of the legendary Paddy Moloney at the Norway Drammen Theater in 2001.?
