Shelter Spotlight: Leavenworth County Humane Society
Northeast Kansas Animal Welfare Foundation
Supporting animal welfare organizations and combatting cruelty and pet overpopulation since 1983.
This Month's Shelter Spotlight goes to Leavenworth County Humane Society, Inc.!
Originally founded as Leavenworth Humane Society in 1885, their mission stated “the purpose of the organization shall be the prevention and punishment of cruelty to children and animals and the better enforcement of the laws relating thereto.” The current iteration of this organization came together in 2006 and began operations in 2008.
LCHS takes in only dogs and cats, but can refer people to organizations that take other kinds of animals. In 2022, LCHS took in 268 dogs and cats. 2020 was their highest intake year at 455 dogs and cats.
While they do not have their own vet clinic, they do offer microchips when they are open to the public. They can also loan traps for TNR programs. The staff often refer people who need what they can't provide to those who may be able to help them.
LCHS's Executive Director Crystal Blackdeer said that she is most proud of how engaged and active in the community this organization is and their involvement in advocacy. She went on to say, "we seek harmony and mutual support in animal welfare, not division".
