Shell Inspection: A key preventative maintenance measure

The shell is the largest component of a kiln. A damaged kiln shell is extremely expensive to correct and can cause unexpected (and costly) equipment downtime. At NAK, we prioritize preventative maintenance measures to keep unexpected failures to a minimum.

Here's some simple preventative maintenance measures you can start implementing today:

  • Schedule a daily "walk by"
  • Visually look for any cracks, heat damage, distortion, erosion/corrosion
  • Periodically check shell thickness with UT or drill

We recommend a yearly hot kiln alignment and mechanical audit. Rotary Kilns are subject to many static and dynamic stresses that are sometimes due to underlying mechanical or thermodynamic problems. A kiln alignment will address these issues and optimize the longevity of constituting elements in the system while resetting the kiln to OEM parameters.
