Sheffield’s iconic rock venues re-imagined

Two of the city’s most popular venues of yesteryear have been brought back to life as limited edition wall art.
Sheffield artist Alan Pennington has teamed up with the city’s Dirty Stop Outs to re-imagine Dixon Lane’s former Rebel’s nightclub and popular rock pub the Wapentake.
Scores of original punters inputted their own ideas into the project.
Dirty Stop Outs’ Neil Anderson said: “When we launched our first series of art late last year we had numerous people asking if we’d consider adding Rebel’s and the Wapentake. We’ve spent the past six months working on the concepts and weaving in different elements.”
The Wapentake was run by Olga Marshall for over two decades and made global headlines in 1995 when Def Leppard made a return visit to perform at the height of their fame.
Rebel’s nightclub was one of the most popular rock clubs in the north of England. It sat high above Dixon Lane in the former Penthouse – a venue originally opened by Peter Stringfellow in the late 1960s.
Alan Pennington said: “Though I was sadly too young to go to these venues I absolutely loved being inspired by the stories of what made them so special to so many people.”
Just 100 copies of each print is being made available. Each one comes with a certificate of authenticity.
