Sheep Worrying: A Growing Rural Crime That Costs Farmers Dearly
Sheep worrying by dogs is a serious and growing issue in the UK, particularly during lambing season. For farmers, it’s not just an inconvenience—it’s a devastating crime that leads to financial losses, emotional distress, and severe animal suffering. Despite repeated warnings, incidents continue to rise, leaving many farmers struggling to protect their livestock from what is, in essence, an avoidable tragedy.
The Scale of the Issue
According to recent statistics from the National Sheep Association and rural insurers, thousands of sheep are attacked by dogs each year. The cost to the agricultural industry runs into millions of pounds annually. NFU Mutual reported that in 2023 alone, livestock worrying claims cost UK farmers over £2.4 million. But the true cost is far greater than just financial losses.
Sheep worrying can result in:
? Physical injuries, often fatal, caused by dog bites or trampling
? Miscarriages due to stress, particularly in pregnant ewes
? Separation of lambs from mothers, leading to starvation or abandonment
? The long-term trauma of surviving animals, affecting their future breeding potential
Farmers not only lose valuable livestock but also suffer emotionally and financially, with some even questioning whether they can continue farming at all.
