She Matters is “a community designed to support and meet the mental health needs of Black women,” taking a multifaceted view of Black women’s health problems. It has created a community of therapists, who are trained in a 12-week certification program, so that they make their therapy culturally relevant to Black women. ?
So far, She Matters has raised $300,000 in angel money with a goal of raising $2 million in seed funding.
Founded by Jade Kearney, She Matters was inspired by her personal struggles with postpartum depression when her daughter was six months old.?At the time, she was also trying to complete a second Masters at NYU which further exacerbated her mental health issues. In her quest to seek help, she found that there was an extreme scarcity of mental health professionals who were equipped with the tools to aid a Black woman navigate postpartum depression.
After identifying this problem, Jade decided to find a solution that would provide trained therapists to help Black women deal with mental health issues. The company and the app then grew out of her master’s degree project in Digital Media Design for Learning at NYU which required her to build an app.

Jade then went on to create the She Matters App, which places Black women at the forefront of mental health and wellness, with the hope of providing women the assistance she failed to receive following the birth of her daughter while working to complete her second master’s at New York University.
The company currently has 180 trained therapists and another 700 on a waiting list. Women looking for therapy can instantly sign up to the platform and connect with one of the qualified specialists.
One of Kearney’s latest passion projects includes Black Girl Tech Day,?an annual conference welcoming Black female founders to network, learn, and celebrate their entrepreneurial journey and contributions.?
