Do you agree or disagree ?
Today is Friday, the holiday in the Middle East, where the family gets together and starts with having the traditional breakfast together.
While we do so mostly, my daughters find it an opportunity to ask everything in their minds to get the full attention of daddy. Today my wife wanted to do so(mummy feels jealous sometimes ??) , she was talking about a professional thing in companies, suddenly she asked me the $1 million question :
How do you differentiate between a leader and an ordinary manager?! ??
Here, I went through almost 14 years of memory back, started with the time I got my engineering degree and began my career journey, even I went to my last year in the college which gave me a lot ! I came across too many people I have interacted with, so in less than 10 seconds I had to be ready to answer her, I said :
For me, to become a manager (let's say an ordinary manager), it can happen due to a certain qualification followed by the professional experience with a proven career path, while in many other occasions, it happens due to the college certificates only, can be also due to certain number of working years only regardless of achievements, in some companies it considers your nationality, race, gender, colour, how close you are to the top management, the HR sourcing person nationality; in other words it is not always based on proficiency !
For leaders, I believe they are a mix of qualifications, knowledge, experience, spirit (which is a main difference and measure), they also have vision, in addition to that they possess the magic which is called "INSPIRATION". So, you find always some teams really like and admire their leaders who constantly inspire, but for others they don't keep the same feelings to their managers who are always on routine !
The leader is a real charming person; he turns the hidden skills of his team into power; super power! He maintains the positive energy, he makes everyone feels special, he makes you feel "Renewable" and here it goes!
On the other hand, the ordinary manager will focus only on what's needed to be done, regardless of spirit, hidden skills, humanitarian influence, vision, or inspiration, focuses mainly on the report to be sent to the upper managers and what image should be kept from up to down.
Luckily, I have read the wisdom of Arden recently who said: Creativity is more important than Experience, which inspired my argument !
This is why it is always said, people leave managers not companies..
Do you agree??

4 年Nice article Ali. There is a quote, that could be a answer to your question: "When I talk to managers, I get the feeling that they are important. When I talk to leaders, I get the feeling that I am important" - Alexander den Heijer...
