The enduring question:
How long does it take to develop training?
For decades, the common response in the learning and development field has been, "It depends." Artificial intelligence has long promised to dramatically speed up the development process, a topic I've explored in depth over the years through my posts and articles on LinkedIn ("Artificial Intelligence (AI) Joins the L&D Team as Instructional Designer") and in Training Journal ("Will AI make my job in L&D redundant?"), among others.
So, where do we stand today in 2023?
Surprisingly, the industry benchmarks for human-created training content have actually increased!
According to current industry benchmarks, instructional designers spend an average of 48 hours developing just 20 minutes of online learning, and that's assuming it's a simple page-turner (nothing glitzy, completely passive, information on a page, page-turner).
Ain't nobody got time for that.
Would you believe that you can generate almost 20 minutes of online course material in just 5 minutes, and it won't cost you a dime?
This is the magic of AI.
Watch the video below to see how an AI-powered Web site can quickly and easily research a topic, then create three modules with twelve lessons, totaling 12 to 19 minutes of reading material. And that's not all - the AI also generates practice exercises and a knowledge quiz, which can enhance the effectiveness of the learning material and reinforce key concepts.
Creating activities and assessments would typically require a human instructional designer to spend hours, if not days, more in development time.
This artificial intelligence-powered tool can even create the SCORM package for you, making it easy to upload the course to your Learning Management System (LMS).

What if you're looking for something a little more animated?
Artificial intelligence has you covered there too.
With a bit of minor editing, I converted the first lesson - The Power of Storytelling - from the AI-generated Leadership Communication Skills: How to Speak So People Want to Listen online learning into an animation.
Even though the animation tool was able to convert the content, including generating the voiceover, within seconds, I spent nearly an hour fine-tuning the characters, voiceover, and scenes to get the resulting 3 minutes of animated online learning the way I wanted it.

One hour is quite remarkable when you consider that traditional methods typically require an average of 84 hours to develop a mere 20 minutes of animated online learning content, even for simple animations.

What do generative AI SUPER POWERS mean for L&D?
Artificial Intelligence (AI) signifies this now wave of automation technology, urging people to let go of tasks better suited for machines and refocus their efforts on more strategic contributions to value creation.
How can L&D professionals and practitioners ensure their relevance and deliver increased strategic value?
Although it may seem trite, acknowledging this shift should encourage each of us to "disrupt ourselves" before external forces inevitably do so. This self-disruption entails proactively evaluating the aspects of our work that could benefit from automation.
the face of uncertainty and disruption, let us choose wisdom and resilience, forging a path forward with courage and foresight.
Don't hesitate. Make the move while the choice is still yours to make.

About the Learning AI Newsletter
The weekly Learning AI newsletter steers L&D practitioners toward augmentation and automation strategies, highlighting critical skills and capabilities paired with practical applications of artificial intelligence tools to transform their practice. This approach enables the delivery of accelerated and elevated learning solutions, at the speed and need of business.
Tools used in this article:
*CourseAI: https:www.courseai.co
SteveAI: https://www.steve.ai
*A word of caution if you intend to use CourseAI to create online learning of your own - read the CourseAI Roadmap where they've made their intent clear to use all user inputs to "fine tune on content generated" which means your ideas and outputs are destined to become "digested" by their model.

1 年Pretty mind blowing how quickly this has progressed Trish Uhl, PMP ???? - thanks for consolidating your experiments & insights into a weekly newsletter. Makes it much easier to revisit and keep track of what you're doing ...& leverage from that & apply etc ??). I especially appreciate the opening context, comparing "typical" design/dev time using "current" tools vs new AI driven ones to create equivalent or close to equivalent output. It will be interesting to see how this changes week to week!
Claire Kennady - Learning Tech warm up read :)
I've been getting so much from my clumsy first attempts with ChatGPT. Biggest thing for me, and may help with other neurodivergent folks, is that this bypass my struggles with task initiation. I tend to try to boil the ocean, but when I start with AI, I get a solid text to build off of. Always plenty of rewriting, but that's better than taking a good chunk of those 48 hours not starting, getting overwhelmed, or going in the wrong direction.
