To Shave or Not to Shave?

That has been my question. I am very attached to my beard (as it is to me!), as anyone who knows me will testify. I have worn it with pride for seven years now and it is a feature that has become very close to my heart (or should that be face?). 

So why am I even considering shaving it off then? A good question and one I have been wrestling over for some time. But in the end an easy decision, a small burden to bear compared to the suffering endured by so many people affected by cancer. If such a small act of compassion can help these people face and overcome this traumatic illness, then it will be worth it.

At the age of 21 I was diagnosed with a rare condition, Hereditary Leiomyomatosis and Renal Cell Cancer (HLRCC) and without the extraordinary support and skill of the staff of the Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) I might not be writing this now. So what’s a few facial hairs compared to that! 

Over the last five years, under the care of the staff at GOSH, I underwent treatment to remove a number of sarcomas surgically, and this experience helped me to appreciate the tireless and often unrecognised work these professionals carry out day in, day out to save lives.

So back to my beard shaving! I have decided to give something back to these amazing people by donating ￡2000 to their cause. And that’s where you come in, my dear family, friends, colleagues and anyone else who feels moved to act. 

On 28th April I will be shaving my beard and the video of this historic event will then be broadcast live on social media..
