Thriving in today's fast-paced business landscape demands unwavering leadership. In my three-part series, "Sharpening Your Leadership Edge," we have explored the essential competencies for success. So far, I have covered eight out of ten crucial skills needed in today's market.?
Now, in this edition, let's delve into the final two must-have skills: resilience and agility. Discover how these qualities can make you an effective leader.
Agility
Leaders in today's global environment must be adaptable and agile to steer their teams towards organizational goals. In the face of increased competition, technological advancements and automation, companies are constantly being presented with new challenges. Quick response times and innovative solutions are crucial in achieving success. Leaders with agility can respond rapidly to changing circumstances, while also ensuring quality standards are upheld.
Chick-fil-A is a prime example of how agility can be used to create success in the digital age. The company has leveraged its core capability of providing high quality food with fast service by using technology to gain a competitive edge. They have used mobile apps and online ordering systems to provide their customers with convenience and flexibility, while also creating loyalty programs which reward frequent customers. In addition, Chick-fil-A has focused on creating a supply chain that can provide fresh ingredients to its stores quickly and efficiently. This agility in the delivery of their food products ensures that customers receive high quality food every time they order from a Chick-fil-A location. The company's leadership has also been agile in responding to customer feedback and pivoting its strategy in order to meet changing customer demands. By adapting to the latest trends, Chick-fil-A has been able to maintain its dominance in the fast food market for over 50 years.
This example demonstrates that by being open to new ideas and adapting quickly to changing customer needs, leaders can ensure their businesses remain competitive and successful.
Resilience
Resilience is a key attribute of effective leadership. It's the ability to cope with adversity, as well as the capacity to remain focused and motivated despite uncertain or challenging conditions. A leader who possesses resilience is better equipped to make difficult decisions and guide their team tough times of disruption and change. This gives them an edge in today's ever-changing market, as they are able to confidently anticipate changes, take risks, and adjust quickly when needed.
By having the strength and determination to stay the course amidst turmoil, resilient leaders can ensure that their team remains focused on achieving their goals no matter what obstacles arise. Resilient leadership also sets an example for others in the organization; it shows that it is possible to remain positive and motivated during difficult times.
Marisa was a leader in the retail industry. She had been working her way up for years and finally achieved a long-held dream of becoming the head of her department. But soon after starting in the role, Marisa faced adversity with one of her major projects. Her team encountered resistance from senior management and she had to fight hard to keep the project alive. Marisa sought me out for coaching during this challenging period. She discovered how important it was to navigate her emotions and not get riled by the situation. Marisa also learned that this was a good time to discuss with her manager how he can best support her and brainstorm ideas with her team. Marisa also met weekly with her mentor who encouraged her by reminding her of her abilities and past achievements.
Marisa persevered and eventually succeeded in getting the project off the ground. The success of this project gave her team new found confidence and motivation to take on bigger projects.
In my book,?Driven to Thrive ,?I discuss the following ways you can foster resilience and prepare for adversity and challenges:
Marisa's resilience in the face of adversity was a key factor in her success as a leader. She showed that no matter how difficult the situation seemed, with hard work and dedication, and tapping into her resources, success was achievable. Marisa's story serves as an inspiration to all who face adversity in their pursuit of success. It reminds us that no matter how daunting the situation may be, if we stay resilient and keep fighting for what we believe in, we can accomplish our goals.
