The Sharp Turn In Your Life
All of us have driven or still drive cars in our daily lives at different times. You remember the sharp turn while driving when the road was two way? You remember when car was speeding up and all of a sudden an unexpected or a defined turn came with a clear road sign went through our eyes? Here are the few options you must have had experienced:
- Kept the same pace and controlled the car, didn’t slow your speed?
- Stopped the car with sudden brakes and turned back?
- Slowed down the car and let the sharp turn pass and then again speeded it up?
Yes I am sure most of you picked the option #3, you slowed down the car, focused on the road and kept strong hands on steering and your eyes on the road so that you know who’s coming from the other side and at what speed.
This is exactly what happens when you take up a new job or get a promotion in your professional career. Here are some tips that can help your career car right on track without stumbling upon the corporate road.
- Understand The Pace: Just like you slowed down the car and judged the other car’s speed coming from the opposite side of the road, you need to do exactly the same in professional life. Whenever you join a new company or get a promotion, you need to understand the basics, company’s pulse, your line manager’s speed and direction. This gives you a clear path so that your capability tires get the road grip.
- Chances of Collision: Now if you haven’t slowed down the car and didn’t see the other car’s speed coming from the other end you might end up in a collision. The other car is your boss’s speed and approach. If you haven’t noticed what your line manager grid of priorities and importance are, you might end up in a collision that is losing balance between your strengths and weaknesses and eventually ruin your career with that company in the beginning.
- Control: While taking that turn, you were very much in control and vigilant, you were alert and your eyes were on the track and the other car’s speed. You had a firm grip on steering so that the car doesn’t shake and tires don’t slip during that turn. Now see how important your controls are in continuous capability building and professional grooming? You don’t know what capability your boss possesses that matches your current skills set. So you need to control your horses and let the situation flow into your own direction. Once you get the control on the system you unleash your strengths.
- Vigilance & Emotional Stability: Your vigilance and emotional stability played a vital role in fine-tuning your driving skills. Keep these same in your professional aspirations as-well. While taking up the new job or getting a promotion, you need to be vigilant regarding your peers behavior, their openness to work, collaboration and your line manager’s response on your ideas and initiatives. You should be emotionally strong and vigilant in your daily communication and stay away from brickbat. You might need to adjust yourself according to audience on different levels.
All these above stated factors are extremely important for every professional. Thank you for reading
