My Culinary Adventure of Sharing Plates and Building Bridges with Nepalese Tapas
Nepal's vibrant culture is about to take a delicious new turn! Imagine cozy evenings spent with friends, laughter echoing as you share a variety of delectable Nepali dishes, all served in bite-sized portions – a Nepalese tapas experience!
This innovative concept draws inspiration from the popular Spanish tradition of tapas, but with a delightful Nepali twist. Think succulent jucy momo, lamb sekuwa skewers, crispy samosas filled with spiced vegetables, dollops of mouth water marinated mustang potato, and refreshing plates of seasonal greens drizzled with aachar (pickles).
More than just a meal, it's a celebration!
This isn't just about enjoying delicious food; it's about fostering a vibrant social atmosphere. Sharing plates encourage conversation, connection, and a sense of community – values deeply rooted in Nepali culture.
Bhatti Pasals to Modern Tapas: A Legacy of Social Dining
Nepal's rich history of Bhatti Pasals, we have to start from Newari cuisine, deeply rooted in Nepal's cultural heritage, presents a rich heritage of flavors and culinary traditions. Among its gems is the essence of Bhatti Pasals, rustic eateries nestled in the Kathmandu Valley, where the heart of Nepalese communal dining beats laid the foundation for this exciting evolution. These bustling havens have long been a place for people to gather, socialize, and enjoy a hearty meal. The tapas concept takes this a step further, offering a modern twist on a cherished tradition.
Kathmandu Valley's hidden gems bhattis offer a taste of traditional Newari cuisine and culture, with potent rice-gin drinks like raksi and buffalo meat snacks. In Patan, narrow alleys around Durbar Square hide these rustic gems, while Kirtpur boasts Newa Lahana for authentic Newari fare. Tongba, a warm millet drink, warms up chilly days, with the Small Star Restaurant being a popular spot. And for unique pork momos, New Dish is the go-to place. Finding these establishments may be a challenge, but the experience is well worth it for a glimpse into local life and flavors.
I have own definition for Nepalese Bhatti, typical Kathmandu valley's bhatti – a sort of Nepalese speakeasy has minimal décor and is fairly hard to find In Kathmandu's nameless alleys, traditional bhattis serve rice-based home brew and buffalo meat delicacy and local snacks in historic, timeworn settings.
