"She Can Take Me There"
In mid-February last year, Southwest Michigan experienced a very rare ice storm that froze our trees in a moment in time and wreaked havoc on our town. It was an eerie weather phenomenon that felt more like Halloween season and not what we normally expect of a Michigan winter in February.
I was home because the driving conditions were unpredictable and I channeled this song I named "She Can Take Me There." This entire piece has a musical theater vibe to it similar to the songs "Memory" from CATS and "In My Life" from Les Miserables. Slightly sweet yet melancholy and haunting.
And, strangely the song developed into a manifesto of economic possibility for women and developing disruptive innovation from the creative void. Here is a lovely article defining four different types of innovation by Benjamin Talin if you would like to learn more about the subject.
At the time, I had been in a deep study and reflection on the paradox of the current economic landscape to simultaneously cast out disruptive innovation and overly romanticize it. It is my professional opinion that modern economics rarely makes space for actual disruption and more often marginalizes it into the realm of "no supply and demand" before it even gets a chance to build traction because the capital investment runs out too soon.
Anything that shakes up the status quo is deeply deeply judged by our human psyches, yet the innovator is HAUNTED by her ideas and desire to bring them into the current human reality.
It's a fine line between fantasy and disruptive innovation!
My song offers an inquiry into the human psyche that is now deeply intertwined with global capitalism and the development of our own unique brand as a "finished product." I pose the philosophical inquiry of "if she could be the finished product, then she can take me there..." and "who wants to be complete?" Encouraging the listener to welcome women into economic leadership roles to make our humanity complete.

If She could be the finished product, then She can take me there!
Take me there x 2
Then She can take me there!
For the truth will play both sides until the product is complete
And test it on the masses, who wants to be complete?
Take me there x2
Then She can take me there!
DISRUPT!
DESTRUCT!
And test it on the masses, who wants to be complete?
If She could be the finished product then She can take me there.
More Thoughts
I admit, it's a weird song even for me. It's not one of my favorite compositions by beauty standards of melody and harmonics, yet it's one of my intellectual and theatrical favorites I have ever written.
This song reflects a deeper acceptance of mine to fully adopt Free Market Capitalism as a way of life in order to liberate myself and my true talents. I wrote this song for my future self. For me, this was deeply controversial, not because I was loyal to the alternatives, but because I wanted to rebel against centering money and profits as my top priority in life. I wanted to naively release the tension of monetizing everything and just trust. This has not worked out in my favor, although I am aware that it does work out for some people.
I have wrote about this phenomenon before that musicians have the worst business plan ever, which is relying on luck, circumstance, and hard work to see them through! Reform is much needed for musicians to build successful lives around their talents in the future.
What about you? I would love to hear your thoughts and feelings that come to mind when you listen to my song! Please feel free to comment below or send me an appropriate comment if you want to remain private. Anything creepy or inappropriate will get BLOCKED!
This song is intentionally triggering and weird so I recommend that you listen to it when you are in an angsty mood, like rage against the machine kinda mood or a dripping in despair kinda mood. The world is unfair and sometimes we need a song to weirdly honor that yet also embrace an anthem-like hope for the future.
