Sharing gratitude for an epic year: Giving thanks to Relay's people, values, and customers

2023 was an epic year for Relay ??. We started the year with ambitious goals, and we met or exceeded most of them, enabling us to make significant progress toward our mission of transforming payments for the trucking industry.

Some of the remarkable milestones include:

  • Working alongside 350,000+ drivers, forming a thriving community for those who use Relay’s mobile app
  • Securing acceptance at 1,500 truck stops, providing nationwide coverage for diesel fuel payments
  • Welcoming 90,000 carriers as valued customers
  • Facilitating $1.5 billion in transactions each month through our new product, RelayDirect
  • Adding 50+ team members to our team (and we’re still hiring!)
  • Formally recognizing our team through 32 awards
  • Earning 88% team member engagement


Reflecting back on this extraordinary year, filled with significant growth, I’m certain the only reason we achieved these results is because of the incredible contributions from our team, our continued focus on our values, and our commitment to our customers and their business.

At Relay, we believe it’s paramount to celebrate our wins. So in this post, I’m sharing gratitude for an incredible 2023 and explaining how we got here.

The Dedication of Our Team

Our story wouldn't be possible without the contributions of our team members. Each and every person on our team, no matter their role, contributed to our success. Each person’s individual contributions enabled us to achieve our goals, from delivering products that experienced rapid adoption to our 24/7 support team who earned us rave reviews from customers.?

When I reflect on the team we’ve built at Relay, one way I describe it is by explaining that we have a high “say-do ratio.” Meaning: we actually do the things we say we’re going to do. When you recruit, hire, and onboard with that in mind, it creates trust and a shared understanding. It’s really nice when you can count on people to do the things they say they’ll do, and it underscores how we’re all in it together (one of our core values!).?

In 2023, we added over 50 new team members to our community, growing the company to over 140. Operationally speaking, I’m proud of the fact that we continued to hire and onboard so many people without missing a beat. I attribute this to the fact that we got it right the first time by building a strong foundation to support rapid hiring and onboarding, enabling us to scale quickly. We’ll continue to be intentional about our growth strategy as we add even more high-performing, purpose-driven team members in 2024.

Values Guiding Every Decision

At Relay, we take immense pride in our core values — Own the Work, Invent the Future, and We're In It Together. They’re the DNA of our organization. These values are not just words on paper; they're our North Star — guiding every decision we make and every action we take.

A founder I was advising once asked me: “how do you know if your values are really working like they should?” I responded that when operationalized effectively, you can actually see and feel the impact and the connection they’ve created through your team members. It’s the palpable sense you get when you walk into a meeting or a common area and you know your people genuinely love being there.?

Think about the inverse — have you ever walked into a place and gotten the sense that everyone was just phoning it in? You can definitely feel the heaviness of that energy. When you walk into our office, it’s obvious to everyone that it’s a special place. Our energy is contagious and the gravitational pull is real!

Belief in Our Customers

Our journey goes beyond internal accomplishments. We stand firm in our belief in the importance of our customers and what they do—especially the often-underappreciated truck drivers who literally drive our economy. In an industry marred by antiquated practices and fraud, Relay is not just a technology provider; we are champions of change that strive to make our customers' lives better.
