Remember when engagement metrics were all about likes and comments?

We know that if the engagement rate is high, the content is shown to a larger audience. We didn’t know exactly how the algorithms rank each engagement, until now...

Instagram Chief, Adam Mosseri, told his audience that shares are a key driver in reach. Further to this, Social Media Today suggests the algorithms drivers for reach are ranked in this order: share rates, watch time, comment rates, like rates.

So, how do I get more shares?

  • Create content in formats that are preferred by users (e.g. only portrait video-styles on Instagram).
  • Include a call to action like ‘Share this with someone who you want to go on vacation with.’
  • Think about what will make your content relatable, inspire nostalgia or make your audience laugh.
  • Follow @creators on Instagram to see what’s trending. But remember to stay on brand with content that’s relevant to your business.
