#Sharemycheck
I don't usually share personal goings on through Linkedin but I believe my daughter Julia's efforts to help during our national crisis merits sharing to my broader professional community.
Hi there,
I hope you’re doing well and keeping safe during this stressful time <3
Over the weekend, there were reports of people beginning to receive their stimulus checks and you may even have received yours already. I’m pledging to share my check by donating it to Mass Redistribution Fund, because it’s a collective of frontline grassroots orgs locally that needs funds now.
The federal stimulus checks are not enough to compensate people who have suffered the most from COVID-19. And many will not receive a check at all, including millions of undocumented and incarcerated people. This crisis is disproportionately hurting Black, brown, Indigenous and undocumented people, elders and disabled people, and people trapped in prisons and detention. Community-led efforts are leading the way on caring for people in crisis, and building long term solutions so communities can survive and thrive through the next storm. For those of us with access to wealth and class privilege, one of the most powerful things we can do is share resources. I'm reaching out to you because I want to open space in my networks for discussions about wealth and privilege, even though they may be hard and uncomfortable.
Personally, even though right now it feels like things are financially precarious for me on the brink of graduation from graduate school, I’m reminding myself that I still have a large safety net with having a college education, ability to work remotely and still earn income, etc. I want to use these next 6 months to 1 year to gather as much information as possible about what the economic changes mean for my own personal wealth, and in the meantime push myself to redistribute as much as possible.
I’d love to hear more about if you think this is something you’d be interested in joining me on (https://www.sharemycheck.org/) or reactions or feelings you have to thinking through big picture wealth redistribution.
If you want to learn more, talk through this on the phone, or generally open more of a collective space with peers, let me know - I have access to organizing tools to bring folks with wealth and class privilege together to unpack these concepts together.
Wishing you strength and peace during this time,
Julia
P.S. This is a moment for those of us with high incomes and/ or high net wealth to step
up to give more. Individuals making <$75,000 are receiving stimulus checks. For high income earners not receiving a check, please participate in giving $1200 or more with the hashtag #ShareMyWealth.
