Share your pie-in-the-sky ideas
This is a bit of a departure from my 'normal' kind of article, but my network is full of creative types (and those who know how to actually transform ideas into practical products), and I thought this would be fun.
I'm sure, like me, many of you are constantly coming up with ideas for useful products or services that don't exist. Some might be things that one day, if the stars align, you may do something with. This is not the place for those. Rather, these are for those ideas that come in fleeting moments, neat enough to share, but that you're never actually going to pursue.
Please share. Who knows? You might inspire something great somehow. Here are a few I've come up with in the last few days:
- Likely the most practical of the three, I've wondered why no open-source repository for CNC code seems to exist, as exist for 3D printing. I think such a thing would shine a spotlight on how CNC mills and/or lathes are as good, usually better, in regards to many of the hyperbolic claims regarding how 3D printing is purportedly going to revolutionize literally everything. It would require a bit of additional information, such as stock-size, origin of the part, fixturing information, tool loadouts, and keep-out zones, but I think it's doable, without being too onerous. This is especially true if combined with a service that sells hobby-level CNCs with standardized tooling, possibly already pre-loaded, standard stock material, in select sizes, and accompanying fixturing specifically designed for this purpose.
- Given various complaints I've heard over the years about the impersonal nature of social networking, how about a twist on things? What if there was a social network, that cost a small fee to sign up for. Upon sign up, they send you a little device, probably wearable, or something you'd put in a wallet. The catch is that you could only 'connect' on the site if your device comes within a certain small distance of the potential connection's own device. It would definitely be niche, but I could see there being a market for such a thing.
- How about a largish solar battery up in space. It could collect power slowly, and then distribute it quickly. Potential uses include rapidly loading space vehicles with power post-launch, to power the next stage of travel, saving satellite companies from having to create and launch their own power collection systems on their satellites, and possibly extending the life of satellites with damaged or dirty solar cells. Of course, anything it would dock with would have to be both accessible and designed to facilitate said docking. And, since it has to have docking capabilities, perhaps it could serve double duty and clean up space-debris in it's off time, given that the nature of capturing the debris is probably fairly similar to a docking maneuver.
So, what fun ideas would you like to share?
