Grandma Bette Celebrating her 97th Birthday

Share A Smile With Grandma Bette

Last week, my family celebrated my mother-in-law's 97th birthday. Of course, she prefers to tell people she's only 16, and may get upset with me for telling everyone her real age here, so I apologize for that now.? (I'm certain she's reading this, as she's one of my most avid blog readers - rarely does one get delivered without a kind note back from her.)

So today, I share this blog post in honor of my mother-in-law, Bette.? Aside from creating/raising my amazing wife, and welcoming me into her family over 25 year ago, she is a constant source of much joy in my life in so many ways.? Every time I see her, I get a smile on my face.?Until considering how to honor her in a blog post, I never really thought much about why or how she had that effect. But, after some reflection, I've determined it's because of how she always makes me feel:

Welcomed.? From the moment I step into her cozy one-bedroom apartment, I feel truly welcomed. Often, when I arrive with my wife, Bette will exclaim, “Oh, I didn’t know Jeff was coming too. What a wonderful surprise!” Her genuine delight makes me feel instant happiness.

Entertained.? Whether sharing her political perspectives, recounting drama in the apartment complex, or reminiscing about her younger years, Bette is always a delight to listen to. Even her challenges with the latest technology or her take on current events are shared with a humor and warmth that keep us all engaged.

Listened to.? While Bette certainly has plenty to share, she is also an exceptional listener. She’s never distracted by her phone (a trusty old flip phone) or her iPad (reserved for email, crossword puzzles, and bingo). Instead, she listens intently to every word, asks thoughtful questions, and offers motherly advice and encouragement.

Cared for.? Though we often bring food to Bette’s apartment, she always insists on taking care of everyone else. She’s ready to make a pot of coffee, bring out cookies or candy, clean up dishes, or even offer up her favorite chair so someone else can sit. Her nurturing spirit shines in everything she does.

Loved.? Of course, this is the icing on the cake. I never leave her apartment without hearing the words, "I love you." And, there's really nothing that can beat that!

As we all sat around celebrating Bette's 97th birthday, I was reminded of how fortunate I am to have such an incredible mother-in-law (and for my children to have such an amazing grandmother).? I hope that this blog post not only put a smile on your face, but provides some good tips/guidance as to how to do the same for those around you. Thanks, Bette!? I love you!

As always, if this message resonates with you, feel free to share it with someone who might benefit. And if you have any thoughts or reflections, I’d love to hear them here.
