Shaping your future at Questrade - Edgar’s growth story

Edgar Harutyunyan’s growth story is a great example. He joined the QFG intern program in Armenia in July 2021, interning for the Quality Assurance Engineering team. Edgar’s journey to joining QFG is a unique one. Artashes Harutyunyan, Director of Questrade International in Armenia, came across Edgar while working at the College of National Polytechnic University in Armenia. Artashes served as chairman of the Graduation Committee during Edgar’s thesis defense. Edgar’s project, an online collaborative code editor, stood out. It used cloud technologies and microservices architecture, technologies not taught in his curriculum. A self-starter, Edgar had gone above and beyond the requirements of his program.

As a leader at QFG, Artashes is always on the hunt for great talent. “Edgar made a great impression on me during his graduation thesis defense. He stood out among his fellow students with his dedication and commitment to growth through hard work,” said Artashes. Edgar’s innovative and entrepreneurial spirit matched  Questrade’s values. Afterward, Artashes invited Edgar to apply for the QFG internship program. 

Edgar passed the interview and joined the team. As an intern, he tested Questrade Edge Mobile, a new app for advanced traders. Edgar also helped maintain existing services, adding new features, running load tests, and improving performance.  

During his internship, Edgar took second place at a Questrade Security Hackathon with over 30 participants. In the "Capture the Flag" style Hackathon, participants searched for vulnerabilities in different web and API-based challenges to gain points. At the end of his internship in February 2022, Edgar landed a full-time role as a Junior Software Engineer in the Digital Investing Engineering department. He enjoys working on the complex tasks the role has to offer. 

Fellipe Lima, the Director of Software Engineering, Digital Investing, saw Edgar’s growth first-hand. "Edgar is a rising star Software Engineer at Questrade,” said Fellipe. “Since the beginning of the internship program, his willingness to learn new technologies, tackle challenging assignments, and propose new ideas to improve our systems made him recognized among peers, nominated for internal awards, and drive his fast career growth.".

Each year, we award team members for their contributions to the company. This year, Edgar won QTG's Sherlock Holmes Award, presented to an individual who uncovers potential problems before they happen, takes preventative measures, and advocates for best practices. Edgar is the first junior team member to win this award. 

When asked about his experience at QFG, Edgar said, “I'm proud to be part of the Questrade team. I love Questrade’s culture, values, and mission. Questrade is a place where I can grow and improve my skills professionally and invest in myself. I get the opportunity to work with teams from different countries, initiate, lead discussions, and make a change. Since my internship, my manager and team members have supported me in my journey every day. Their support and Questrade’s opportunities have helped  me quickly grow within the company.”

Outside work, you can find Edgar sharing his skills with the next generation. You can find Edgar teaching kids robotics, 3D printing, and software engineering at Armath Engineering Laboratories, where he has been volunteering since 2016.
