Shaping the Techade: Digital Interoperability and Net-Zero Emissions

Diverse voices across industries converged at the NASSCOM Technology & Leadership Forum 2023 on February 27 and March 1-2 to discuss what to expect in the Techade with the dramatic pace of technology adoption—and how it’s transforming lives amid newer opportunities and challenges.

Accenture in India leaders, Rekha M. Menon and Mahesh Zurale , shared their views on how businesses can leverage technology to transition to a net-zero path and build a strong digital core for a competitive advantage. Both themes rooted squarely on the need for businesses to stay the course on their technology transformation to reinvent and stay resilient.?

With a 200 percent?increase in disruptions over the last five years, companies must adopt a Total Enterprise Reinvention strategy. It all starts with building a strong digital core, said Mahesh Zurale, Accenture’s senior managing director for Advanced Technology Centers in India, in conversation with Irina Ghosh, chief operating officer at Microsoft and Dr. Chris Marshall, vice president of data, analytics, AI, sustainability and industry research at IDC.

?Mahesh cited Accenture’s Total Enterprise Reinvention Report that shows how the pandemic paved the way for enterprise reinvention for a certain group of companies. Called Reinventors, these companies were able to drive growth, optimize operations through cloud, data and AI interoperability, and redefine performance frontiers.

?He also shared that Reinventors are unlocking more revenue growth (10 percent), cost-reduction (13 percent), financial value (1.6x), sustainability (32 percent) and innovation (11 percent) than their counterparts.?

On the next day, Rekha M. Menon, chairperson and senior managing director at Accenture in India, spoke with Kathleen McGinty (Katie), chief sustainability and external relations officer at Johnson Controls, and Lina Gandl?se Hansen, Denmark’s state secretary for trade and global sustainability, on how companies, and government need to enhance the quality of infrastructure by creating an enabling environment for clean electrification and circularity that will result in urban decarbonization and resilience. It is here that the role of technology was underscored as a key catalyst to achieve net-zero goals.

Katie highlighted the critical role that smart buildings can play in this journey. With buildings accounting for 40 percent of global CO2 emission, a strategy to make them more efficient is a powerful way to address some of the climate change challenges. The discussion also touched upon the opportunities that lie ahead as three-fourth of the infrastructure that will exist in cities by 2050 is yet to be built. Accenture is collaborating with Johnson Controls to co-develop and co-deploy solutions to accelerate and advance automation in building operations.?

Both Lina and Rekha talked at length about how net-zero is a collaborative effort and should become a global goal. The discussion touched upon Denmark’s sustained policy measures and enabling frameworks that accelerated the use and adoption of technology to promote the production and use of renewable energy. They spoke about Danish Government’s Global Climate Action Strategy “A Green and Sustainable World” and the Climate Act that mandates?decarbonizing all sectors to fast-track the net-zero emissions goal by 2050.?

The discussion ended with Rekha, Katie and Lina highlighting the importance of skilling as a key factor in fostering a sustainable future. Scoping the potential, Rekha cited Accenture’s 2022 Youthquake Meets Green Economy report that outlines that 32.6 million green jobs could be created in APAC by just decarbonizing the built environment, greening agriculture, supplying low carbon electricity and transitioning transport. Many of these jobs will require unusual combinations, such as chemical engineering and innovation, and climate science and AI.?
