Shaping strategy and processes at appliedAI: A conversation with Jessica

As part of our special Advent Calendar series, we’re speaking with various team members from the appliedAI Institute about their roles, highlights of the year, and visions for the future. Today, we speak with Jessica E. Landgraf , the Chief of Staff. She works closely with the Managing Director and theleadership team, ensuring strategic initiatives are implemented and helping to shape the future of AI.

As a newcomer to the appliedAI Institute, how did you perceive the organization in your first few months? What stood out to you?

Jessica: Our company size has proven to be a real strength for me. I think it's great that we can all come together physically to work on strategic initiatives, for example. This not only encourages connection & creativity, but also significantly shapes our culture: each of us has the opportunity to actively contribute and have a voice in what the institute looks like as an organisation and as an employer.

Looking back on the last months, what would you say has been the highlight of your year so far?

Jessica: Without a doubt, my highlight this year was the Offsite event. Just two weeks into my new role, I had the unique opportunity to meet all my colleagues in person. It was a special moment, especially given how remote our work environment is. Being able to connect with everyone right away made me feel immediately integrated into the team.

Building on that sense of connection, what were some of the most significant achievements of the teams in 2024?

Jessica: I can say that our teams have made significant progress in implementing key strategic initiatives. We've successfully built a solid foundation for long-term impact, and the milestones we've reached in terms of organizational development are very exciting. There’s a sense of momentum as we prepare for the next phase.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

Jessica: What I love most about my job is the variety. No two days are the same. There’s always something new and challenging, and that keeps me energized. I’m also fortunate to gain incredible insights into the organization’s growth while witnessing the evolution of the AI ecosystem.

As you reflect on your time in this role, what would you say are the most valuable lessons you’ve learned so far?

Jessica: Strategic goals are often abstract and long-term, but in order to achieve them, clear, practical steps need to be defined. The most valuable lesson for me was that it is not enough to simply formulate visionary goals - it is crucial that everyone in the team understands how they can make a concrete contribution to achieving them. Maintaining a balance between the long-term strategic goals of the Institute and the day-to-day business is essential to keep the organization running smoothly.

That’s a great insight. We like to end always the interview with a personal touch. Is there a particular quote that inspires your approach to your work?

Jessica: Yes, one of my favorites is by Simon Sinek: "Greatness happens when the person with the wild imagination collaborates with the person who knows how to get things done."

Thank you, Jessica. This quote perfectly describes the essence of how we work as a team. The interplay between our different departments, each bringing unique skills and perspectives, not only defines us but also shapes our collective understanding of AI. It’s this kind of collaboration that allows us to drive innovation and impact the entire AI ecosystem in meaningful ways. Stay tuned for tomorrow’s feature!
