Shaping the future and pioneering workforce solutions for adult social care
Partners in Care and Health
Supporting councils to improve delivery of social care and public health services, delivered by the LGA and ADASS.
Francis Saukila is a National Graduate Development Programme trainee adviser who has been working in the Partners in Care and Health workforce team, and helped develop two useful tools which we launched last month. Here he writes a bit more about the thinking behind both tools.
This week sees the return to school, college or studies for many households and young people's minds will be focussed again on their futures and ambitions. For leaders in adult social care, the perennial problem is how to harness this talent and ambition for the benefit of their sector.
Working with the Association of Directors of Adult Social Services regions, we've developed two powerful tools to help councils a social care workforce for the future.
The Careers academies toolkit was commissioned by us and the North West Association of Directors of Adult Social Services (NW ADASS). It’s a comprehensive resource that serves as a guide to establishing impactful career academies.
Career academies are partnerships between health and care organisations in a particular area. They offer job advice, career guidance and development, apprenticeships, and opportunities to gain management, specialist, and leadership training to those interested in pursuing health and social care careers. Career academies are an effective way of developing a workforce pipeline that is well-trained and equipped to deliver a quality service in an evolving environment.
We’ve joined forces with West Midlands ADASS (WM ADASS) to introduce a further resource to support those interested in establishing academies, the Career academy maturity matrix. This matrix enables councils to assess their progress and preparedness in developing an academy. It's more than an evaluation tool; it's a planning instrument.?
Unveiling the maturity matrix's key attributes?
? Seamless integration: The matrix complements the career academies toolkit, amplifying the impact of both resources.

? Holistic assessment: Dive deep into pertinent themes, gaining a comprehensive overview of your academy's overall progress.
? Informed decision-making: Insights from the matrix empower stakeholders to make informed choices, optimise resource allocation, and tailor interventions for maximal impact.
? Milestones and benchmarks: Clear milestones and benchmarks provide a roadmap for evaluation, ensuring no vital aspect is overlooked.
? Empowering growth: More than an evaluation tool, the matrix empowers academy developers to set a growth trajectory, nurturing a dynamic and sustainable learning environment.
? Adaptable and user-friendly: Tailor the framework to suit the unique needs of your academy, ensuring practicality and relevance across diverse settings.
While the challenges in adult social care are significant, so are the opportunities. Career academies serve as a bridge to career development, guidance, apprenticeships, and specialised training, inspiring individuals to choose social care as a rewarding vocation.
Armed with the career academies toolkit and maturity matrix, councils can move forward with future workforce planning and development.?
