Shaping Australia's Energy Workforce

A recent research conducted by Jobs and Skills Australia and supported by the Clean Energy Council discusses the findings of a workforce needs for a net zero economys of a significant workforce capacity study conducted by Jobs and Skills Australia, supported by the #CleanEnergyCouncil.

This study, titled "The Clean Energy Generation: Workforce needs for a net zero economy," focuses on the skilled workforce required to support Australia's transition to clean energy.

Key highlights from the study include the need for additional electricians and construction workers to meet the demands of clean energy infrastructure. For instance, to achieve targets like 82% renewable generation and 43% emissions reduction by 2030, the study estimates a demand for 32,000 more electricians and 450,000 jobs in construction.

Moreover, it addresses existing shortages of engineers and the reliance on skilled migration, with over 50% of electrical engineers currently born overseas. The study emphasizes the importance of reforming training and education to create more inclusive pathways, particularly for women, First Nations peoples, and workers born overseas.

Dr. Anita Talberg, Director of Workforce Development at the Clean Energy Council, underscores the urgency in attracting new talent, especially in STEM fields and construction, to bridge existing skill gaps. She highlights the critical role of the next seven years in establishing or strengthening education, training, and migration systems to ensure a workforce capable of delivering the energy transition.

As per the research, the significance of addressing workforce challenges to facilitate Australia's transition to clean energy and emphasizes collaboration between industry stakeholders to achieve this goal.
