FAIGIN FACE BLOG : Interview with "Shape of Water" CREATURE Artist

My April FACE BLOG features a fascinating interview with Nikita Lebedev, creature artist/digital sculptor for the "The Shape of Water," Best Picture at the 2017 Academy awards. Nikita used my book "The Artist's Complete Guide to Facial Expression" as a key reference for the dozens of blend shapes he developed to express a full range of emotions and physical states for the man/fish creature that is featured in the film. To illustrate our conversation, I include screenshots of the creature's face showing wide-eyed attention, anger, fear, shock, confusion and joy, as well as one example of the creature's "mask" before and after its CG additions.

Great job Gary. I really love "The Shape of Water". The facial expression of the creature was stunning. Will have a look at your book in the near future.
