"Shani Jayanti- Custodian of Karma & Justice”

Shani Jayanti, a propitious day dedicated to the God of Justice in Hindu Shastras- Lord Shani, falls on the Amavasya tithi (new moon day) during Krishna Paksha in the month of Jyeshtha. As per the Gregorian calendar, it lies in the month of May or June. This year, we are commemorating this very divine occasion of Shani Jayanti on the 6th June ‘24.

As per “Drik Panchang”, the “tithi” for “Shani Jayanti” in ‘24 is as follows:

Shani Jayanti on Thursday, 6th June ‘24

Amavasya Tithi Begins - 07:54 PM on 5th June ‘24

Amavasya Tithi Ends - 06:07 PM on 6th June ‘24

As Lord Shani was born on this day, hence his birth anniversary is celebrated as 'Shani Jayanti.' It is also known by the names 'Shri Shanaishchara Janma Diwas' & 'Shani Amavasya.'

Significance of “Shani Jayanti” in Astrology:

?The name "Shani" has been derived from a Sanskrit word "Shanaishchara" which means? 'slow mover.' Here, 'Shanai' (pronounced as 'Shani') refers to the planet Saturn & 'chara' stands for 'movement.' Hence, the Vedic astrology believes that the sixth planet (from the sun) of the solar system- 'Saturn' is related to Lord Shani. Saturn takes a period of 30 years to complete one rotation around the Sun. That's why, it is considered that the effects of the planet Saturn are slow and last for a longer period in a person's horoscope.

Astrology considers that Shani Dev is the ruler of the planet Saturn which is the planet of 'Karma.' It is associated with the zodiac signs of Capricorn and Aquarius. Its effects can be both positive and negative, depending on its placement in the birth chart. If Saturn is well-placed, it can bring success, recognition, and prosperity to the native. However, if it is placed in an unfavorable position, it can cause delays, obstacles, and challenges in one's life.

Rituals and Observances of “Shani Jayanti”:

Shani Jayanti holds an immense significance for all the devout followers of Shani Dev. The devotees visit a nearby Shani Temple or Navagraha Temple & light a mustard lamp mixed with black sesame seeds. For Shani Puja, evening time is considered the best. Offering black Til (black sesame seeds) to Lord Shani is very meritorious, hence people perform the Shani Tailabhishekam along with the Shani Shanti Puja.

Many mantras related to Lord Shani are also chanted to calm down his impact. The recitation of Shani Stotra is also observed. Remember that the power of the mantra lies in the intention and devotion behind it. Chanting the Shani mantra with faith and sincerity can alleviate the negative effects of Saturn in one's life.

Many people observe a strict & devoted fast to observe penance for any ill deeds committed in the past and to seek refuge of Lord Shani. The devotees abstain from consuming food and water during the entire day and break their fast only after performing the evening Puja.

At many places, the women observe a fast of Vat Savitri on this day. As per Purnimanta lunar calendar system (followed in North India), it is observed during Jyeshtha Amavasya coinciding with Shani Jayanti. And in Amanta lunar calendar system (followed in parts other than North Indian states), it falls during Jyeshtha Purnima.

Hence we find a 15 days' gap between the observance of Vat Savitri Vrat by North Indian and South Indian women.

Donating black grams, sesame seeds, mustard oil & black clothes to the poor, needy on Shani Jayanti is believed to? be a powerful practice to appease Shani Dev. Feeding animals, birds & insects, especially black dogs, crows & ants, also fills one's life with prosperity and desire fulfillment.

I do believe that there are aspects of our Hindu culture and traditions that are often less discussed and this one is definitely one of those. Thank you for highlighting this subject and educating us on the day's significance and the learnings from Lord Shani! ??

Beautifully written piece about Shani Jayanti! It truly captured the essence of the day and the importance of introspection. I will definitely be incorporating some of these practices into my own observance. I loved reading what we can actually learn from Shani Dev, especially the qualities of humility & discipline. Also, I was unaware about his birth story earlier, but the way you have presented it is commendable! What a perfect depiction of every small event. Thanks a lot for sharing this!
