With recent inflation data revealing an increase of almost 8% in #australia , one can easy sit back and wonder, 'where do we go from here?' ??Firstly, it is worth noting I am no expert in economic analysis nor do I wish to be, but, it is certainly a topic most organisations are starting to worry about - which is where I truly get concerned.

We are seeing mass redundancies and restructures across the market especially in industries within #technology however, and more relevantly from a HR perspective, where is the short-term support to continue business performance, current employees, rem reviews, projects and more, across all people and culture streams?... ??

You guessed it!... Contracting

Hiring contractors can be a smart business decision for a variety of reasons, especially in a market where it is difficult to think 'longer-term'. Here are some reasons why:

  1. ????????-??????????????????????????: Contractors are typically hired on a project-by-project basis, which means that you only pay for the work that they do. This can be a cost-effective solution for businesses, as you don't have to pay for benefits, annual leave, sick leave time, or other costs associated with permanent employees.
  2. ??????????????????????:Hiring contractors allows you to bring in specialised skills and expertise on an 'as-needed' basis. This can be especially useful in a volatile market, where businesses may need to quickly adapt to changing conditions. Additionally, contractors are typically able to start work on a project 'ASAP' which can help businesses stay agile.
  3. ?????????????? ????????: Hiring a contractor often means you are hiring a service provider or consultant who already established their own business, frameworks, tools and resources to complete the work.
  4. ??????????????????????: As your business needs change, you can easily scale up or down the number of contractors you hire. This can be especially useful in a volatile market, where businesses may need to quickly adapt to changes in demand.
  5. ?????????? ????????????????: Hiring contractors may reduce cost on equipment and 'brick & mortar' as more and more contractors operate remotely, desk swapping or completely virtual if needed.

Finally, hiring contractors can be a little different to how you would attract candidates for permanent roles. The market can be lean especially for skills highly sought such as certain regulatory changes, operating model or enterprise agreements (for example). Advertising is an option but in most cases, companies need these candidates ASAP especially if it is a short term contract. We offer a range of contractors across the wider HR, People Change & HSE job families for example, most of which partner with us to provide certain projects and opportunities through our client portfolio's as and when required.

So, maybe this article has given you some thinking capacity around contractor hiring over the coming months and beyond. There may be a short term requirement for one of the many workers out there recently affected by redundancy with your business or you might have something you need to flesh out with your #recruiter If its people & culture related or you are unsure where to start, feel free to drop Shane O'Neill a note to chat further.

Spot on Shane. Businesses can easily scale up and down with contractors. And as you said, can be considered less risky and more cost-effective compared to a permanent team.

Great initiative, Shane! I think it's important to highlight that many talented people choose to work differently now. Contracting and interim opportunities are fitting that brief, and companies that engage these folk will benefit from a diverse breadth and depth of experience, knowledge, and insights. The future of work is actually now.
