This Philip K Dick inspired novel, tells the story of Remy Remington, hero, and narrator, who discovers his nemesis Jean Marat dead in a bath. The story then rewinds 18 months to how Remy came to be accused of his murder, who really murdered Jean Marat and why famous portraits are alive and walking the streets of modern-day Melbourne.

Remy, against the wishes of his domineering papa, wants to be the greatest painter the world has ever known. To do this he will paint his love interest Vittoria Corocos for the Archibald, the most famous art competition in the land. But first, he must battle her drug dealing boyfriend Jean Marat for her affection, as well as steer clear of the machination of his psychiatrist Dr. Gachet and the eccentricities of his landlord Edmond Duranty.

All the characters in the book are drawn from famous portraits, with their initial introduction described as they appear in the portrait. We are never certain if Remy Remington is as he says he is, or he is a hack writer called Henry Larsen.
