Shall we dance?

Shall we dance?

Dancing has been a big part of my life for about the last 10 years. I first started out doing Country Line dancing which is more of an individual sport so to speak. One learns how to do the dances and then blend in with the crowd. When I moved to Arizona, they didn't really have much in the way of exclusive line dancing places or venues. Most of the clubs in the area featured couples dancing with live bands. Here are a few things that I learned about dancing that perhaps can be akin to running one's own online business these days:

Dancing has allowed the extroverted side of me get out and be social and has also allowed the introverted side of me to get more comfortable in social circles.

Dancing has given me the opportunity to see how people interact with each other and the energy exchanges that go on between folks.

Dancing with a partner taught me the difference between going solo and collaborating with a partner. It also taught me that while some partners are really good dancers it doesn't mean that we "gel" well together or that I felt comfortable with that person. Sometimes the better dancers only want to be with the better dancers. It's not wrong.

In the online marketing space, many times very successful marketers only want to help other successful marketers. They don't have patience for either newbies or just plain average dancers without fancy moves or an amazing repertoire. Also, when I was first starting out, I needed to learn how to blend in to the very noisy crowd online just as I needed to find my comfort zone in the dance club.

For awhile, I just sat there and watched the dancers (anyone do that with their online marketing efforts?).

But then, by becoming a regular, some people started to notice me and some ladies asked me to dance. This was the introverted side of me that didn't want to "put myself out there".... Perhaps if you are reading this and have tried to put yourself out there but it felt awkward then you know what I am talking about.

The extroverted side of us can be okay with putting some messages out there or showing up on zoom calls with groups of other people but the introverted side of us may want to hide or feels drained by trying to compete with all the energies out there in the marketplace.

Then there is the learning curve and with dancing I went to the dance classes before Free Form dancing started. I felt I needed to uplevel my skills if I was going to learn how to line dance or couples dance.

Hiring a coach to help with skill sets like sales, marketing or organizing ones business is like finding a dance instructor that you are comfortable with. In dancing most instructors have empathy for newbies as it feeds their primary business but online many teachers have no time or patience for beginners and direct most of their energy to those who already have "good moves".

This can be challenging and draining for both the new dancer and the new online business person.

How do we learn to dance well in the online space when we don't have the skill sets to keep up with the elite entrepreneurs?

In my experience with learning to couples dancing, I found it was important to find and follow "the fun." If I focused on the fun then inevitably I would also find partners who despite my two left feet at times would be happy to dance with me for the fun of it. Those that needed or wanted the best dancer or the best lead where not on my radar.

In the business of getting the word out about what we do and how it could benefit the world I think the same rules could apply.

If we try to fit into everyone else's model, then the dance can become very mechanical and awkward.

If we just stay true to ourselves and do what we like and have some fun, then we will attract those that feel the same way.

Maybe instead of trying to be the best dancer or online businessperson, we can just relax into our idea of fun and connection...

As a Soulpreneur, just follow your Soul's desires and have fun out there! don't worry if you don't follow the beat to every elite drummer, move with the steps that got you here.

Here's to us having fun on our own dance floor of business and life.

Just one favor to ask, "don't step on my blue suede shoes"
