Shaking Up Meditation

“Do you know what you need to do, Catherine? Meditate.”

I am not saying that my meditation friends are wrong; I am saying that I am not wired the same way. And if you are one of my readers, you probably are, too.

The concept is not lost on me, and I get it. Clear the mind and breathe. Easier said than done. I have reached this moment of zen, but it literally took me an hour to stop thinking. Yes, I hear you. With practice, you can get better at it. But for sparkly object people like us, we need a distraction beyond listening to our breath. So here are some suggestions to clear your mind like an Etch-A-Sketch and simply incorporate a few of our senses:

  • Smell and sound: Listen to your breathing, but also have a smell that you love in the room. Bake some cookies before you start. Meditation sound bowls work, too. They are a pleasant sound to focus on, plus we get to do something with our hands. Is traditional meditation really not your thing? Here are some alternatives.

  • Smell and touch, get an hour-long massage (or 30 minutes), and request a lavender oil or infuser in the room. Gentle music is also helpful.

  • Keep it simple. taste and sight could be chewing minty gum on a walk.

  • And dare I say, sight and taste could also be your favorite beverage as you gaze upon a loved one or some other beautiful sight.

You see where I am going here. It is about giving that mind a rest. Disengaging. We are Visionary, shiny object ADD people who CAN do this with just one more thing added. Because we are “extra.”
