Shaken by world events? A time to be thankful that courage is real.

Shaken by world events? A time to be thankful that courage is real.

This year, the world has been hit by events that have shaken us. Natural disasters left hundreds of thousands homeless and lacking some of life’s basic necessities. There have been terrible tragedies in our city streets, houses of worship, and near concert stages—all places where we expect to be safe.

There is so much uncertainty, and it can be easy in times like this for the good to go unnoticed. Yet many people are proving that courage is real, and it’s very much alive. Even in this trying year, displays of selflessness are all around us.

Jett, a 5-year-old Houston-native who now lives in Philadelphia, sent his lemonade stand money to the victims of Hurricane Harvey. One of my colleagues here at Deloitte saw many of his neighbors in peril during the severe flooding brought by the same hurricane and took action. The National Guard and other resources hadn’t yet been mobilized, and his neighbors were running out of options. So for three days, he paddled his canoe to help fellow Houstonians evacuate their flooded homes with their precious belongings and pets. Companies were selfless too, as major cruise lines sent ships to rescue thousands of people stranded by Hurricane Irma. Other companies like mine chartered vessels and aircraft to bring much needed supplies to Puerto Rico. We helped employees, family members, and strangers.

It’s stories like these—and the people behind the heroic acts of kindness—that make me feel proud, inspired, and thankful. It’s in challenging times that we are faced with the test to be our best in the darkest moments. How do we respond to the examples set by these courageous acts? Are we moved to action ourselves? Do we take action when the moment calls?

So, as we head into Thanksgiving, I ask that you please take a few moments to celebrate the brave, kind, and amazing acts of courage that inspire you. Because it’s not enough to just admire those who show courage in moments of crisis—we must share their stories, and be grateful for them. Wishing everyone a happy Thanksgiving!

Articles like these and the real-life stories behind them make you realize things like hope, goodness, and courage still exist in this world along with all the not-so-very good things. Thanks Cathy for the article, it was a good read and subtle reminder to be thankful.
