In a move that has sent ripples across the AI community, Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI , has been ousted in what appears to be a politically driven decision rather than one based on performance or vision. This event marks a significant turning point in the field of artificial intelligence, warranting a closer examination. It's been a fast-moving 24 hours and I thought I would attempt to summarise what has been happening and add my own thoughts on the issues at hand.
The Core Issue
The unexpected move came after the firm's board of directors announced that during a review, Altman "was not consistently candid in his communications with the board, hindering its ability to exercise its responsibilities," This was announced publicly in a blog post where they announced his firing and that current CTO Mira Murati would be taking his place as an interim CEO until a new one could be formally appointed. In short, they basically said he was asked to leave because he was lying to the board. Altman’s firing was released near the US stock market’s close on a Friday, a sign of a planned event, not a knee-jerk reaction to something critical.
However, at the heart of this development, lies a deep-rooted conflict within OpenAI’s board, particularly between Altman and Ilya Sutskever , OpenAI’s co-founder and Chief Scientist. The crux of their disagreement centered around the pace of GenerativeAI development, commercialization strategies, and the imperative measures to mitigate potential public harm.
A Thinning Oversight
This situation was further exacerbated by the diminishing senior oversight within OpenAI’s board. Notable departures include Elon Musk, Reid Hoffman , and Will Hurd, leaving Adam D'Angelo as the sole member with extensive leadership experience. Interestingly, D’Angelo, as the CEO of Quora and developer of Poe , a ChatGPT rival, brings to light a potential conflict of interest.

The Aftermath of the Decision
Following Altman’s dismissal, a series of high-profile resignations occurred. According to various press sources Greg Brockman , OpenAI’s Co-founder & President, stepped down, followed by Jakub Pachocki , OpenAI’s GPT-4 Lead & Director of Research, Aleksander Madry , the Head of AI Risk, and Szymon Sidor , an open-source baselines researcher. These departures suggest a significant shift within the organization. As more comes out in the coming weeks it will be interesting to see how many more key employees also depart.
Predicting the Future
The track records of both Brockman and Altman suggest that they are likely to continue making substantial contributions to AI, potentially even establishing a formidable competitor to OpenAI. This scenario mirrors the 2021 split of the Anthropic founding team from OpenAI, who were co-authors of the GPT-3 paper and are now among OpenAI’s strongest competitors.
Historical Parallels
This upheaval at OpenAI is reminiscent of the 1985 incident at 苹果 , where Steve Jobs was pushed out by the board. It stands as a shocking and potentially irresponsible move with far-reaching implications.
Concluding Thoughts
What transpired at OpenAI is not just a corporate restructuring but a pivotal event that could reshape the landscape of artificial intelligence development and competition. As observers and participants in this rapidly evolving field, we must stay attuned to these changes and their potential impacts on the industry and society at large.
