Shake Up the Norm: Weekly Dose of Inspiration

Hey Changemakers!

Welcome back to another week of shaking things up! This week, we're diving into the world of financial literacy, exploring the concept of growth mindset for navigating challenges, and unpacking the power of forgiveness for mental well-being.

Financial Literacy: Taking Control of Your Finances

Financial literacy empowers us to make informed decisions about our money. It encompasses understanding budgeting, saving, investing, and managing debt. By increasing your financial literacy, you can take control of your financial future and achieve your financial goals. Here are some resources to get you started:

  • Free online courses: Many reputable organizations offer free online courses on financial literacy. Explore resources from Khan Academy, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), or your local library.
  • Books and podcasts: Numerous resources can guide you on your financial journey. Popular titles include "I Will Teach You To Be Rich" by Ramit Sethi and podcasts like "Planet Money" or "Her Money."
  • Financial advisors: Consider seeking professional advice from a certified financial planner for personalized guidance on your financial goals.

For a fun and engaging introduction to financial literacy, check out Carla Mann's TED Talk "Know the basics of your finances (and empower yourself)" [1]. Mann uses humor and storytelling to break down key financial concepts and empower individuals to take control of their money.

Growth Mindset: Embracing Challenges with Resilience

As discussed in a previous newsletter, a growth mindset is the belief that our abilities can be developed through effort and learning. This mindset fosters resilience and motivation in the face of challenges. Here are some ways to cultivate a growth mindset:

  • Focus on the process, not just the outcome: Celebrate your effort and progress, not just achieving the final goal.
  • View setbacks as learning opportunities: Approach challenges as opportunities to learn and grow. Analyze mistakes and use them to improve.
  • Embrace feedback: Seek out constructive criticism and use it to refine your skills and strategies.

For a powerful reminder about the power of a growth mindset, watch Carol Dweck's TED Talk "The power of believing that you can improve" [2]. Dweck, a renowned psychologist, explains the concept of growth mindset and its impact on success in various aspects of life.

The Power of Forgiveness: Letting Go for Your Wellbeing

Holding onto anger and resentment can be a heavy burden, impacting our mental and physical health. Forgiveness is not about condoning someone’s actions; it's about releasing the negative emotions associated with those actions and finding peace for yourself. Here are some benefits of forgiveness:

  • Reduced stress and anxiety: Letting go of resentment alleviates the mental burden and promotes a sense of calm.
  • Improved physical health: Studies show that forgiveness can lower blood pressure and improve overall well-being.
  • Stronger relationships: Forgiveness can pave the way for healing and rebuilding trust in relationships.

For a thoughtful exploration of forgiveness and its impact, check out Frederic Luskin's book, "Forgive for Good: Healing the Hurts from the Past and Creating a Happy Future" [3]. Luskin, a forgiveness expert, provides practical strategies for letting go and finding peace.

Financial literacy is up there as one of the most important skills to have that I feel is overlooked. That not only impacts our short term wellbeing, but also the sustainability of our lifestyles and habits. Which then can impact our health and wellbeing. Which you highlighted nicely. It is amazing how many decisions are indirectly intertwined.
