The Growth and Challenges of Islamic Finance
Islamic Finance, rooted in ethics and transparency, is emerging as a viable alternative to conventional banking. A driving force in this space is Shaista Mukadam, an academic and lecturer with nearly two decades of experience. Shaista developed the UK’s first undergraduate degree in Accounting and Islamic Finance, blending traditional accounting with Islamic principles, and has been a passionate advocate for education and collaboration.
While the UK has seen success with projects like The Shard, financed through Sukuk, challenges remain. Shaista notes that scepticism and a lack of understanding hinder the industry’s growth. “Islamic Finance is still in its infancy and building within a 400-year-old conventional system takes time,” she explains.
Shaista calls for greater education, trust, and innovation, urging communities to support ethical practices. Her vision is clear: through collaboration and perseverance, Islamic Finance can transform communities and promote global equity.
